Job Description

Start Date: August 2026
Contract Type: 10-month, annual
School Type: Boarding
Schedule: Full-Time

This is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of continued employment depending on the evolving needs of the School.

Bring your passion for classical languages, inquiry-driven teaching, and student mentorship to St. Mark's as we inspire students to engage deeply with the ancient world and its enduring influence on contemporary life.

Why Join Us

At St. Mark's, we believe the study of classical languages and cultures develops intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the human experience. Our classrooms encourage students to wrestle with ideas, communicate thoughtfully, and build confidence as learners and community members.

Teaching here is more than what happens in the classroom. As a faculty member, you'll also serve as an advisor, coach, and mentor, helping students navigate school, discover new interests, and grow into their best selves. Our community thrives on collaboration and connection, and we're looking for educators who are excited to engage fully in all aspects of residential school life.

Housing may be available for this position.

What You'll Do

Reporting to the Head of the Modern and Classical Languages Department and the Assistant Head of School/Dean of Faculty, the Classics Teacher serves as a key member of the St. Mark's community.

You will:

  • Teach introductory through advanced levels of Latin and/or Greek to students in grades 9 through 12
  • Design engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support a diverse community of learners
  • Foster students' growth as readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators through meaningful feedback and active classroom engagement
  • Collaborate with department colleagues on curriculum development, course design, and innovative teaching practices
  • Serve as an advisor and mentor, supporting students academically and personally throughout their St. Mark's experience
  • Engage fully in community life: coaching two seasons of co-curriculars, participating in weekend activities and events, and more
  • Working thoughtfully with students and colleagues in ways that strengthen the inclusive and relational culture of the School

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate strong content knowledge in Latin, Greek, and classical studies
  • Bring experience teaching classics at the secondary school level and a commitment to student-centered pedagogy
  • Exhibit the ability to teach inclusively and connect effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and learning profiles
  • Model creativity, flexibility, and intellectual curiosity in the classroom
  • Collaborate enthusiastically with colleagues and contribute meaningfully to all aspects of school life
  • Convey warmth, empathy, and high expectations in working with adolescents
  • Demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Show comfort using educational technology and digital tools to support teaching and learning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Classics or a related field required
  • Minimum of two years of secondary school teaching experience preferred
  • Advanced degree and boarding school experience preferred

Why You'll Love It Here

  • A welcoming, close-knit community of students and colleagues who value curiosity, collaboration, and connection
  • Comprehensive benefits, including meals, health coverage, and tuition remission. Housing may be available for this position.
  • Access to beautiful campus facilities, from the fitness center to wooded walking trails
  • The opportunity to design engaging courses and contribute creatively to a dynamic academic program
  • The chance to make meaningful daily impact both inside and outside the classroom

Salary Range

$40,000–$80,000, commensurate with experience.
