POSITION TITLE: College Counselor

SALARY PLACEMENT: Teacher Salary Schedule

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING:

Requires a Bachelor's degree with preference toward a master's degree in counseling. Two (2) – Four (4) years experience working with high school students in academic and college counseling or in college admissions.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the direction of the Vice Principal of Academics, the College Counselor will organize, maintain and operate a high school College & Career Office and provide a wide variety of career information and materials; communicate with students, faculty, parents and community representatives concerning career planning and college entrance. The candidate for the position of College Counselor shall be committed to Catholic education and capable of providing spiritual and educational leadership to students. This is an 11-month position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Provide career and college entrance information and assistance to students, teachers, parents and counselors; coordinate day-to-day operations and schedule activities, programs and speakers.

  2. Prepare career education and instructional materials for use by teachers and students; assist students in locating and using college/career information as needed for research, assignments and post-high school planning.

  3. Present to 9-12 grade students and families to discuss and create a personalized plan of action (academic options, careers, college selection).

  4. Assist seniors with college application and financial aid process.

  5. Forge relationships with college admission offices.

  6. Create detailed reports of college acceptances and matriculation.

  7. Establish and maintain calendar detailing all relevant due dates, test dates, scholarship info and upcoming college related events.

  8. Schedule visits by representatives from local colleges; organize, coordinate and publicize career-related events and other opportunities for students to learn about higher education preparation.

  9. Plan and conduct career days, career month, and college fairs.

  10. Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this position must have the ability to:

  1. Sit and stand for extended periods of time.

  2. Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer, and to perform assigned classroom tasks using both hands.

  3. See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids.

  4. Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels and outdoors and on the telephone.

  5. Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.

  6. Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
