Job Description
Our client is seeking a detail-oriented Background Investigator for a contract/temporary opportunity in Virginia Beach, VA, located in the Town Center area. This 100% onsite role is ideal for a professional with strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage sensitive information with integrity and discretion.
As a Background Investigator, you will support important compliance and screening processes within a government and public sector environment. This role offers structured training, steady seasonal work, and the opportunity to build valuable experience in investigations, compliance, interviewing, documentation, and case management. Key Responsibilities - Conduct interviews with applicants, employers, references, and other sources to gather accurate background information.
- Review records, documentation, and case details to identify and resolve investigation issues.
- Manage multiple background investigation cases while meeting required timelines and quality standards.
- Use multiple systems and technology platforms to document findings and support case progress.
- Communicate professionally by phone and in writing with applicants, references, and internal contacts.
- Complete required training and follow established procedures for confidentiality, compliance, and reporting.
Compensation and Benefits - Pay rate: $20 to $22 per hour.
- Job type: Contract/temporary.
- Work location: 100% onsite in Virginia Beach, VA, Town Center area.
- Standard schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Minimum schedule is 40 hours per week.
- Required overtime may increase the schedule up to 60 hours per week.
- Occasional 10-hour workdays may be required.
- Must be available to work at least one weekend day, with occasional Saturday or Sunday shifts of approximately 4 to 5 hours.
- Seasonal work periods are expected during Fall Outage Season, July to early October, and Spring Outage Season, early December to mid-March.

Required Qualifications and Skills
- Conduct background investigation interviews with applicants, employers, references, and other sources.
- Review case records, identify discrepancies, and resolve investigation-related issues.
- Manage multiple active investigations while meeting deadlines.
- Prepare accurate documentation and communicate findings clearly.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 1 to 2 years of relevant experience preferred based on the experience level for this role.
- Ability to obtain and maintain NEI background determination.
- Must pass pre-employment requirements.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be able to work required overtime, including at least one weekend day when needed.
- Proficiency using multiple systems, databases, or technology platforms.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective interviewing, active listening, and report writing skills.
- Strong time management, prioritization, and organizational skills.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and work ethic.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Worksite is located on the 12th floor. In an emergency, the employee may need to descend 12 flights of stairs. Candidates should advise if accommodation is needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in background investigations, compliance, human resources, security screening, administrative case management, or government/public sector support.
- Experience conducting interviews by phone and documenting information in a structured case management system.
- Comfort working in a high-volume, deadline-driven seasonal environment.
